Weekend Escape Camps

The YMCA’s Weekend Escape program offers low income single parents the opportunity to get away with their children and to share new and exciting experiences. The program is a chance for parents to connect with their children and take time out to watch them laugh, play, climb, paddle, swim and have fun. The program is also an opportunity for parents to share and discuss the issues they face as single parents.

The camps are not workshops or self help sessions, they are just fun holidays, a chance to take a break from the challenges of day to day life.

Shared custody is a reality for over 800,000 separated families in Australia. For many, single parenthood can mean growing up in an environment of immense financial stress; over 20% of all single parent families live in poverty!

Sadly, despite their parents best efforts, many of these children miss out on what most of our children take for granted; the opportunity to grow and learn through shared experiences with their parents, the opportunity to have fun, to go on holidays or to simply experience new and exciting activities. Extreme financial hardship and the lack of a supporting partner often means parents are forced to work while in custody of their children or simply lack the means to share these experiences with their children.
