PrYme Carers Camps

The YMCA’s PrYme Carers program offers grandparents who are the sole carers of their grandchildren a window of respite, an opportunity to not only share quality time together as a family, but also for grandparents to take ‘time out’ to enjoy the company of their partner and peers.

Throughout the 3 day program, children are engaged in a diverse range of exciting outdoor adventure activities and have the opportunity to challenge themselves, and grow and develop personally. These activities are shared with their grandparents who are also more than welcome to attempt the rock wall, archery and giant swing themselves!

Grandparents are also treated to some ‘child free’ time which might include a relaxing tai chi session, a riverside afternoon tea, or an outing to the movies, just to name a few.

ABS suggests that in over 22,000 families across Australia, grandparents are the primary carers of young children. Kinship care, as it is known, is the fastest growing type of out of home care in Australia representing 56% of all cases in NSW. Having raised their own children, these carers should be enjoying the prime of their lives. Instead, in most cases, their lives are turned upside down; faced with the challenge of full time parenthood, in many cases coupled with the emotional and behavioural challenges of children who have experienced disruptive family breakdowns.

Despite the growing incidence of kinship care and the dramatic impact on the lives of all involved, grandparent carers, despite often being on a pension, receive less financial support than foster carers because they are classed as ‘family’.
